The following has been circulating around the net, so I passed it on to a few of my friends – not realizing I would be hitting a hornet’s nest with a stick. (I’m not sure who originated it – but he has my vote.)

The entire Congress of the United States is corrupt. And I mean both Houses and I mean both major parties. I realize that a few Members of each House are Independents and at least one is a declared Socialist but, as a group of people, they are absolutely the most corrupt bunch to ever disgrace our Nation.
In November of 2010 the entire House of Representatives will have to stand for re-election; all 435 of them. One third of the Senate, a total of 33 of them, will also stand for re-election. Vote every incumbent out. And I mean every damned one of them. No matter their Party affiliation. Let's start all over in the House of Representatives with 435 people who have absolutely no experience in running that body, with no political favors owed to anyone but their own constituents. Let's make them understand that they work for us. They are answerable to us and they simply have to run that body with some common sense.
Two years later, in 2012, vote the next third of the incumbents in the Senate out. You'll know who they are because their names will be on the ballot and, in most cases, will be shown as the Incumbent. If yo u don't know who your Senators are, (there are only two for each State) find out. And then vote them out, too! We can do the same thing in 2014 and, by that time we will have put all new people in that body as well.
We, the People, have got to take this Country back and we HAVE to do it peacefully. That's what the Framers of our Constitution envisioned. Please, if you love this Country, send this (as I have done) to absolutely everyone whose email address appears in your address book. This thing can permeate this Country in no time. Let's make it happen.”Here are a few of the responses I’ve received:From Richard Garfunkel, radio host of The Public Advocate:“I hate to say, but this opinion is beyond ridiculous. If it happened, which it could obviously not, the country would be lead by a group of novitiates who had not a clue about anything. They would be replaced by people representing the other side. In other words if all the Democrats were defeated and they hold 60% of the House, the new majority would be 60% Republican. Conversely if all the GOP members were defeated, all 40%, they would be replaced by Democrats. Well that theory is patently idiotic because those districts are normally Democratic or Republican dominated. In fact they have been gerrymandered by both parties over the years to favor their own demographics. But even in the swing districts, some years they are between 5-15% of the seats, the momentum would be with the present incumbent’s party. In other words his statement is farcical, and it is only self-serving to the minority party that was voted out in 2006 and 2008 for good reason. Where was he in 2006 when the GOP controlled Congress and authored most of the problems we have today? I’ll tell you he was happy with how things were being run. These sophomoric solutions insult the intelligence of any thinking person. The bottom line is this, if you don’t like what is going on work to dump your own Congressman and Senator when they stand for election. We’ve had nominal conservative government since Reagan with alliances between the Dixiecrats, the Blue Dog Democrats and the GOP. Where have we gotten to? Expensive elections dictated by the conservative US Supreme Court, lobbyists controlling both parties, (3300 healthcare lobbies spent $300+ million fighting against health care reform since January 1, 2009) and two unfunded wars. Along with that a huge homeland security department, and a GOP sponsored and unfunded Medicare drug plan as a give away to industry, with no relenting in price inflation, we have had bigger government than any Democrat proposed. Just remember, Medicare and Social Security are funded separately by payroll tax, not the operating budget, and Social Security has run surpluses for years which has been borrowed mostly for the general fund by GOP presidents, in fact, to the tune of $2 trillion. Stop believing the myths of socialism and start to realize that increased savings rate is inhibiting our recovery. Why you ask? Because 80% of our GDNP is consumer spending as Wall Street exported jobs overseas!
To which I replied:NO, folks,he's not a communist,just an advocate of a misinformed concept! the premise put forth was not a republican or conservative one-no it was as non political as it gets! Throw them ALL out!
btw,if you want to talk about corruption and malfeasance in govt,look at the: post office,veterans hospital,social security,medicare, dept of energy, dept of agriculture,etc etc---- it should be obvious by this time in history ,"we dont need govt help!" Demographics,swing districts like political parties, are distortions of the basic constitutional principals of america and mean nothing when it comes time to measure good govt

When hasn't it been totally corrupt? As long as there is greed + everyone looking out for their own best interest this is the society we will have. The people "in charge" aren't the people in charge. The "banks", pharmaceutical companies as well as a few others are all in bed with the politicians. Im not saying theres no hope I'm just saying that replacing those people with anyone else isn't going to stop the greed & therefore isn't going to change this situation. It is truly a sad state of affairs that this planet is in...”

Anyway, I have no qualms about replacing “take care of us” with having the government “establish socio-economic and psychosocial systems enabling each of us to achieve our positive potential,” or at least preventing those systems from blocking individuals from achieving their positive potential. I see this reflecting the dichotomy between entitlement and endowment: Making people dependent on entitlements inhibits realization of their potential, while foster positive expression of the abilities with which we are endowed promotes realization of our potential.
The real culprit, imo, is the negative side of human nature (e.g., excessive greed, self-centeredness, lack of empathy and compassion) coupled with the great restrictors of positive development (ego, ignorance, fear and self-deception). This has led to the creation of a perverse form of capitalism in which many business strategies focus on providing lower value to the consumer (lesser quality at higher cost) in order to yield greater profits for the producer/provider who then uses that money to buy political favors resulting in policies that place constraints on the potential of those with fewer financial resources and economic power, while giving the well-politically-connected a distinct competitive advantage.
What we need is a government and society whose primary focus includes achieving the goals of promoting greater:
1. Self-Discipline
2. Personal Responsibility
3. Empathy and Compassion for the least advantaged (Social Responsibility)
4. Public Accountability (Transparency).
In addition, there are at least 8 objectives that relate to those achieving those goals; and a proposal can be judged by how likely they are to achieve these objectives:
1. Balance Investment & Spending
2. Balance Savings & Borrowing
3. Balance Conservation & Consumption
4. Balance Endowments & Entitlements
5. Connect Ends & Means (Resource Availability)
6. Connect Should/Must Dos & Can Dos (Priorities)
7. Preserve Security/Protection
8. Preserve Rights/Freedoms (Opportunity & Liberty).

Wow, this clearly is something that's struck a chord for there to be so many responses.
Richard, while I appreciate that this is a monumental task, it is not un-doable. The fact is that any time in our history we have attempted to 'reset', it's been a real struggle.
It seems to me, everything in evidence points to the fact that the United States is in desperate need of a third party.
I am neither a supporter nor one who vilifies G.W. I did not support Bill or his attempted impeachment. And I am not middle of the road. I am opinionated on most subjects and my opinions cannot be comprehensively categorized as liberal or conservative.
My thought is: What exactly is the difference between the candidates. Sure you can say “this woman is clueless”, “this guy's an idiot”, or “have you heard what he said today?”
I get that. Invariably though, the person making one of these comments has an ax to grind or a position to further, which ostensibly is illustrated using one of these comments. There certainly are philosophical differences between democrats, republicans, libertarians, neo-cons, and new democrats.
However, I think that voting loyal to a party's or candidate's philosophical belief does nothing constructive. It in fact has gotten us to the point we are today – polarized and paralyzed.
The two parties that exist today in Washington, and to a large degree every state house in the nation, are held to the bizarre set of rules we have set forth:
* Do not offend
* Tell them what they want to hear
* Do not reach too far to one side
* Always be politically correct
* Reduce to the least common denominator
* Support your party
* Defend the indefensible
* Attack the other side
and if you need to
* Take shots at your party
The net result from this, is providing cover to each party to continue to do nothing – hence both sides can argue, with some degree of credibility, that it's the other side's fault. We trumpet the party lines while turning a blind eye to the incredibly stupid things our side does.
Not only does this make no sense, but it has reshaped our precious two party system. Yup, we have two parties alright: the incumbents and the non-incumbents.
Candidates and parties carefully craft their message, using the above rules, so they can they tell us what we want to hear. We're narcissistic enough to believe they are saying it because they really believe it. In reality, they want (or do not want to relinquish) power.
Our narcissism, in turn, supports their narcissistic behavior. We give lots of money to people who have no genuine interest in us – beyond what size check we're addressing to their reelection.
Except (and this is an important exception), the larger the check, the more interesting we are to them. This self serving interestingness equates to access and influence.”
Somewhere in the middle of all this someone forwarded this:

Which of course prompted the Richard Garfunkel to reply:“Nice words, but not applicable to the real world of today. What we need is better tighter regulations on gifting and the revolving door of government-lobby and business. The cost of elections is the greatest corrupting influence on anyone’s ideals and therefore we are constantly challenged and compromised from both sides each election. How could anyone believe that any new group would be less affected by temptation and the desire to be re-elected. We need real solutions not pie-in-the-sky anti gravity speculation and pipe dreams!”
All-in-all, a thought-provoking exchange! Although I may disagree with some of these opinions, I applaud anyone who believes in open discourse and continues to seek solutions to the problems we all perceive. Thanks all --
